Breathwork vs meditation: what real differences are there on the body and brain?

Breathwork vs meditation: what real differences are there on the body and brain?

Breathing exercises and meditation are often associated with the category of wellness practices. However, their mechanisms of action on the body and brain are profoundly different.

Where meditation primarily works through attention and awareness, breathwork works directly through physiology.

Understanding this difference helps to choose the practice that best suits your needs.

Meditation: an approach through attention and the mind

Meditation is based on observation, presence, and attention to the moment. It primarily involves:

  • the prefrontal cortex (reflection, observation)

  • the ability to take a step back

  • regulation by consciousness

Its effects are progressive. They settle in with regular practice and the ability to remain present to what is happening.

 Breathing exercises: a physiological approach

Breathing work does not begin with attention, but with the voluntary modification of the breath.

This change has an immediate effect on:

  • the heart rate

  • the CO₂ / O₂ balance

  • the autonomic nervous system

  • bodily tensions

The effect is often faster, because it does not depend on the ability to concentrate or to calm one’s mind.

Two different paths to peace and tranquility

Ask for concentrationAccessible even with a distracted mind

These two practices are not in conflict with each other. They simply take different paths.

Why some people have trouble meditating but not breathing

Many people who are stressed or anxious have difficulty meditating because their minds are too active.

Breathing exercises can then serve as a first step: by regulating the nervous state through breathing, it becomes easier to access a meditative state.

The role of the body in both practices

Meditation often invites us to observe the body.
Breathing modifies bodily sensations directly.

This can facilitate access to stored emotions and tensions, without going through analysis or reflection.

 Two complementary approaches

Used together, breathwork and meditation can be very complementary:

  • Breathing exercises prepare the body by regulating the nervous system

  • meditation deepens the state of presence and awareness

Understanding their differences allows us to use them more appropriately and effectively.

Breathwork vs meditation: what real differences are there on the body and brain?

Choosing the practice according to one's inner state

When the mind is agitated, breathing can be a simpler approach.
When the state of mind is calmer, meditation can allow for a more refined work on the consciousness.

Both approaches have their place, but their effects on the body and the brain are not identical.
