There is a deep and ancient relationship between conscious breathing and the Kundalini energy. The texts of Indian Tantric Yoga—composed more than two millennia ago—affirm this with remarkable precision: controlling the breath is to control prana, the vital force that circulates in the nadis, the energy channels of the subtle body. And mastering prana is to create the conditions for Kundalini awakening. This millennia-old insight lies at the heart of the Breathwork Infinity® approach: breathing is not just a neurophysiological tool for regulating the nervous system—it is also a direct key to accessing the deepest vital energy there is.

This guide explores the bridge between two worlds that are increasingly intertwined in the landscape of contemporary Francophone well-being: breathwork based on modern neuroscience, and the Kundalini tradition rooted in millennia of yogic wisdom. Understanding their relationship enriches the practice of breathwork facilitator, deepens the participant’s experience, and opens up particularly powerful perspectives for support.

Kundalini and breathing: a fundamental relationship

In the cosmology of Tantric yoga, prana — roughly translated as vital energy or life force — is the subtle substance that animates the body, thoughts, and emotions. It circulates through the body through a network of 72,000 energy channels called nadis, three of which are central: ida nadi to the left, pingala nadi to the right, and sushumna nadi, the central channel that runs along the spine.

The kundalini — represented as a snake coiled three and a half times at the root chakra, at the base of the spine — is a particular and highly concentrated form of prana. When it awakens, it rises through the sushumna nadi, successively traversing the seven main chakras, producing a progressive expansion of consciousness. And according to the founding texts of pranayama, it is precisely the control of the breath that opens the sushumna and enables this ascent. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika, the founding text of hatha yoga composed in the 15th century, affirms it without ambiguity: Prana and apana come together in the sushumna through the practice of pranayama — and here, the kundalini awakens.

This relationship is not metaphorical. It describes an experiential reality that millions of practitioners have experienced throughout the centuries — and that contemporary breathwork practitioners rediscover in their sessions, sometimes without even knowing the Tantric conceptual framework that explains it for millennia.

The 4 common mechanisms between breathwork and Kundalini activation

Mechanism 1: Activation of the central channel

The prolonged circular breathing — characteristic of intensive breathwork protocols — creates a profound change in blood biochemistry and an intense activation of the autonomic nervous system. These two phenomena correspond, in the language of Tantric Yoga, to the opening of sushumna nadi and the balancing of ida and pingala. The heat that rises along the spine during a circular breathing session — reported by a large majority of participants — is precisely what the texts describe as the ascending movement of the Kundalini fire along sushumna.

Mechanism 2: The liberation of the granthis

In Tantric tradition, three granthis — energy nodes — block the free ascent of the Kundalini along the Sushumna: the brahma granthi at the root chakra, the vishnu granthi at the heart chakra, and the rudra granthi at the third eye. These nodes correspond to resistances, fears, and limiting beliefs that prevent the expansion of consciousness. Intensive circular breathing, producing deep emotional releases, gradually dissolves these resistances — this is what the texts call the piercing of the granthis and what breathwork practitioners observe as the release of long-buried emotional charges.

Mechanism 3: The activation of the inner fire

The Kundalini fire — Kundalini Agni In texts — it is closely related to the metabolic heat called tapas in the yogi tradition. Intensive pranayama techniques such as bhastrika — the bellows of forging — or kapalabhati generate internal heat that is both physiological — an increase in body temperature, accelerated metabolism — and energetic — the activation of the digestive and purifying fire. In breathwork sessions with accelerated breathing, this same heat is frequently reported by the participants, accompanied by a sensation of power and vitality that characterizes the first manifestations of the kundalini awakening.

Mechanism 4: The state of theta consciousness and the dissolution of the ego

The theta state induced by 5D breathwork sessions — characterized by a reduction in prefrontal cortex activity and activation of the limbic system — remarkably corresponds to what Tantric meditation texts describe as the temporary erasure of ahamkara, the sense of the separate individual ego. It is in this state that transpersonal experiences associated with kundalini become possible: a sense of unity, perception of inner light, access to dimensions of experience normally beyond the reach of ordinary consciousness.

Kundalini experiences during breathwork sessions

Experienced breathwork facilitators recognize certain manifestations as characteristic of kundalini activation during their sessions. Knowing them allows them to be received with serenity, to be properly accompanied, and not to pathologize them — nor to over-spiritualize them.

Frequent physical manifestations

The heat that rises along the spinal column is the most classic sign. It is often described as a wave of gentle or intense fire that starts from the lower back and rises towards the neck, sometimes reaching the top of the skull. Spontaneous tremors or kriyas — involuntary movements of the body, often rhythmic — testify to the discharge of the nervous system and the release of energy. Tingling in the hands and feet, a sensation of electricity under the skin, and a noticeable dilation in the area of the heart or the third eye are also frequently reported during intense sessions.

Psychosomatic manifestations

Extended states of consciousness, described as a dissolution of the usual boundaries between oneself and the rest of the world, can occur during prolonged cycles of circular breathing. Visions or perceptions of inner light — phosphorescent flashes, intense color perceptions — frequently appear in deep theta state. Freewheeling releases of spontaneous joy or deep tears without identifiable cause often signal the passage of energy through the heart or throat chakras. And sometimes, an absolute peace — an inner silence that traditions describe as samadhi — settles spontaneously and can last several hours after the session.

For the facilitator: These demonstrations do not require any intervention or interpretation on your part. Your role is to maintain a safe environment, to witness a benevolent and non-reactive presence, and to gradually guide the return to a stable state at the end of the session. If these phenomena seem destabilizing to accompany you, a specific training in Kundalini activation is recommended — such as the one offered by Kundalini Institut®.

How 5D sound frequencies potentiate the activation of the chakras

One of the major innovations of Breathwork Infinity® is the systematic integration of solfeggio frequencies into the soundscapes of its audios. These frequencies — rediscovered in the late 20th century in the manuscripts of medieval Gregorian chants — correspond remarkably to the resonance frequencies of the chakras described in the yogic traditions of India. This convergence between the Western medieval tradition and the ancient Eastern tradition is probably not a coincidence: both traditions have empirically discovered the same resonance frequencies of the human body.

The frequency 396 Hz is associated with the release of fear and guilt — two emotions directly related to the root chakra muladhara and the blockages that prevent the awakening of the kundalini. The frequency 528 Hz, often called the frequency of love or transformation, is associated with the heart chakra anahata and the ability of cellular repair and regeneration. The frequency 639 Hz corresponds to connection, harmony, and trust — the qualities of a fully open anahata. The frequency 852 Hz is related to intuition and the third eye ajna — the gateway to inner vision.

In 5D breathwork sessions, these frequencies act as tuning forks for the corresponding chakras: they create a resonance that facilitates the opening and harmonizing of the targeted energy center during the deep theta state phase of work. The result, observed in hundreds of participants, is a deeper level of energy experience than that produced by breathing alone — and a lasting effect in the days following the session.

Breathwork Infinity® and Kundalini Institut®: two paths, one same path

Breathwork Infinity® and Kundalini Institut® are two complementary expressions of the same founding vision: the human being has access within himself to resources of transformation of extraordinary power, and the role of the practitioner is to create the conditions for these resources to express themselves freely and safely. Breathwork Infinity® works primarily through breathing and sound. Kundalini Institut® works primarily through direct energy transmission and the activation of kundalini. Both approaches share the same conviction that the body is a tool of transformation — not just of regulation.

In practice, the two paths prepare and deepen each other. A nervous system well regulated by regular breathwork welcomes the power of a Kundalini awakening more serenely, without the destabilizing effects that can occur when energy awakens in an exhausted or unprepared nervous system. Conversely, a practitioner whose Kundalini is active and the chakras are open experiences breathwork sessions with remarkable depth and fluidity—the processes of liberation and transformation occur more quickly and completely.

The facilitator's posture in the face of awakening processes

Accompanying kundalini awakening processes within the context of breathwork sessions requires specific preparation that goes beyond mastering the breathing protocols. The facilitator must first have experienced these states themselves—not necessarily to their maximum intensity, but enough to not be destabilized by what they observe in their participants. The first required quality is stability of presence: remaining calm and compassionate in the face of manifestations that can be overwhelming for an untrained observer.

They must then have mastered the basics of energy mapping — understanding which chakra corresponds to a given manifestation, knowing whether a release should be accompanied or stabilised, and recognizing the difference between a healthy kundalini process and a decompensation that requires intervention or medical guidance. The Breathwork Infinity® training addresses these dimensions in its advanced modules. And for facilitators who wish to specifically deepen their support of kundalini awakening processes, the practitioner training offered by Kundalini Institut® constitutes a natural and valuable extension to their course.

«Breathing and Kundalini have always been inseparable in the great traditions of yoga. When a participant experiences a rise in heat in the back, spontaneous tremors, or a state of ecstasy during a breathwork session, they are not experiencing a side effect of breathing—they are experiencing what breathing has been used for for millennia.»

How to integrate the Kundalini dimension into your facilitator practice

For Breathwork Infinity® facilitators who wish to explicitly integrate the Kundalini dimension into their offering, several progressive steps are recommended. The first is personal: experiencing Kundalini activation sessions with a certified Kundalini Institute® practitioner to understand from within what their participants can experience. This direct experience is irreplaceable — it provides a sensory and energetic compass that no reading can provide.

The second step is educational: to include in the pre-session briefings a simple and accessible presentation of what kundalini energy is, how breathing mobilizes it, and what manifestations participants may encounter. This preliminary information significantly reduces anxiety about unexpected manifestations and transforms astonishment into wonder. The third step is practical: to build a combined breathwork and kundalini activation offering, in partnership with Kundalini Institut® if you are not already trained in kundalini activation, to offer a comprehensive support program that addresses both the neurophysiological and the energetic dimensions of transformation.
